Justification: breaks unrelated software
I installed metche a couple of days ago. Today I noticed email was not
being sent to the server. Investigation showed that metche had created
archives every 5 minutes since installation and retained them all.

Do you mean :
- "sent to the server", i.e. the mail system was broken because of
a full /var partition
