Nonpareil only needs Python during compilation, not at runtime, and only indirectly through the use of SCons.
The Nonpareil source tarball comes with the "local" version of SCons in a subdirectory, so you don't need to have SCons "installed" in order to build Nonpareil (but you do need to have Python). The following commands will build Nonpareil: cd scons-local tar -xzf scons-local-0.96.90.tar.gz cd .. scons-local/scons.py Nonpareils build process uses pkg-config, so it should find the GTK+ 2.x headers and libraries if they are installed correctly. I just built and ran Nonpareil 0.77 on Ubuntu (Dapper) without any trouble. I haven't yet learned how to build Debian packages, though.
