In response to bug 536653 against gnome-screensaver I updated xserver-xorg and associated packages to the versions from unstable and now the screen gets blanked after the correct amount of idle time however DPMS power saving is not activated. What make it obvious that this is not happening is the power light on my monitor does not change, there is a glow from the monitor and if I press a key the display re-appears instantly without having to wait for the tube in the monitor to warm up.
