I experienced the same behavior today when python-serial was pulled in as
a dependency of bitpim on an i386 sid instance:

Setting up python-paramiko (1.5-1) ...
Setting up python-serial (2.2-2) ...
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/py_compilefiles", line 103, in ?
    exit_status = int(not main())
File "/usr/bin/py_compilefiles", line 90, in main
    for line in sys.stdin:
TypeError: loop over non-sequence
ERROR:root:pycentral pkginstall:
dpkg: error processing python-serial (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Setting up bitpim-lib (0.9.02.dfsg.1-1) ...

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of bitpim:
 bitpim depends on python-serial; however:
Package python-serial is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing bitpim (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 python-serial
 bitpim
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
