You do have a point there about the privileges. It appears to have escaped me.
Logging in
graphically is not neccessary - one can use gksudo.
I was thinking that two thing can be done:
(a) Add it with gksudo in Gnome's Applications->Internet->Driftnet (i.e.
leaving the .desktop as
is and adding
