i had the same problem with both of my laptops. One having an ati radeon
mobility x300 (using r300 driver) and the other one having an intel
i915. Compiz would start nicely and all effects were available but no
window border were present, although gtk-window-decorator was running.
So i created

The problem is probably conneced to this error, of which compiz (not the
decorator) emits several any time gtk-window-decorator is run:
/usr/bin/compiz.real: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
Presuming the non-free nvidia
