After a brief time, KDE stopped accepting my root password for simple tasks

Immediately prior to upgrading kdelibs-related packages (kdelibs,
kdelibs-data, kdelibs4-dev, kdelibs4-doc, kdelibs4c2a) from version
4:3.5.4-3, I was able to successfully use the kdesu dialog to launch a
konqueror window as root.
