Package: mayavi
Version: 1.5-4~frx.1
Severity: normal

Hi!

I noticed a bug while running MayaVi under Debian sarge.
My system is an IA32 machine with a Radeon 9250 based video card, running
XFree86 (version 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge2) with DRI "radeon" driver and
"radeon" DRM module (Linux kernel version 2.4.33.3, compiled from
official vanilla source).

Steps to reproduce the bug:

    # aptitude install mayavi
    $ mayavi /usr/share/doc/mayavi/examples/heart.mv

The central vertical GridPlane appears as black, while it should be
colored according to scalar values and the configured scalar legend.

    * from the GUI, select Module #7 ("7. GridPlane")
    * click on the Configure button
    * in the dialog window, deselect the Scalar Coloring checkbox

The lower bar in the "MayaVi Data Visualizer 1" window is rapidly filled
in red and then gets white again, indicating that some processing was
    performed.
Despite this, nothing changes in the displayed scene.

    * in the dialog window, select the Scalar Coloring checkbox again

Once again, the bar turns red and then white, but nothing changes in the
    displayed scene.

    * in the dialog window, click on the Change Object Color button and
modify the color to some non-black RGB triple

An ERROR window correctly shows up saying:

    | Warning: This setting will have effect
    | only if there is no ScalarVisibility.

Despite this legitimate warning, the setting _does_ have effect and
the GridPlane turns into whatever color you chose.
Acting on other controls has the same identical effect, whatever is
the state of the Scalar Coloring checkbox (checked or unchecked).

I noticed the same issue with the following other MayaVi Modules:
BandedSurfaceMap, CustomGridPlane, IsoSurface, ScalarCutPlane,
SurfaceMap.

All this is obtained with sarge's versions of mayavi (1.4-1) and
vtk4 (4.4.2-6).
Before filing this bugreport, I tried and backported vtk5 (5.0.1-4)
and mayavi (1.5-4) to sarge, in order to see whether the bug was
present in the latest Debian packages.
Unfortunately the same problems arise with my backported packages as
well (that is why the Version: pseudo-header of this bugreport is
1.5-4~frx.1).

Now, I hate to say this, but this bug does _not_ show up on another
Debian sarge box with nVidia GeForce graphics chipset based video
card and nVidia proprietary 3D drivers... :-(
On that other machine, Scalar Coloring works as intended.

Hence, I suspect that the bug could be in the DRI implementation
of some OpenGL function which is used by MayaVi through VTK in
order to perform the coloring.
Feel free to reassign the bug to the correct package, if this is
the case, but please try and assist the other maintainer(s) in
detecting the misimplemented (or missing) DRI feature...

Thanks for the attention!
