Do you have the possibility to test if you can reproduce this still?
I'm hoping that maybe the problem has been fixed since this was
reported
(or possibly that it was some other fault, like broken memory or
something causing random weird problems).

I'm currently doing some bug triaging on on the iproute package in
Debian. I'm unable to reproduce the problem you reported last year on my
Debian Unstable AMD64 installation nor on another Debian Stable i386
installation.
