FWIW, Ubuntu has been carrying the attached patch to wireless-tools since 2006 (i.e., the time of Matthew's bug report). Matthew, do you know if this is still needed for softmac? There's been at least one bug report against wireless-tools in Ubuntu complaining that it breaks other ifupdown
