I read this posting rying to find a solution for something that is most
probably the same problem that you have. My scanner (same model as
wendigo's) takes forever to warm up. I managed to solve this problem by
ensuring that - while scanning

Sorry, this was the Plustek backend we were talking about, not Epson,
so the right command is
SANE_DEBUG_PLUSTEK=128 xsane
