Concerning this particular problem I found reference to such behaviours
in the mailing-lists archives.

would you mind trying pgAdmin III 1.6.2 ? Unofficial debian
packages for etch are available from the main site[1].
It would help to figure out if it's still unfixed upstream or not.
In the meantime, I'll try to reproduce with both versions.
