I am postulating that this might have to do with the new OpenOffice trying to find fonts to display characters that does not exist in the chosen font.
For font that is causing the strange behaviour has only a few characters defined. But in OOo's "Insert symbol" dialog (which takes several minutes for it to show up), it has some extra characters (including some diacritical marks) that should not be there. This is definitely wrong behaviour, because if I choose a font, I only want OOo to show all the characters that actually exist in that font.
