I agree with the other submitters, it's not appropriate for mount to
force installing portmap and nfs-utils.
They are not used on most systems and ~everybody will have to waste time
learning how to disable them securely.

I mostly use debian for servers. Name servers, smtp, http, etc.
My main worry is security, and so I want to have as few pieces
of software running on each server as possible. And I especially
don't want to have any extra TCP or UDP ports listening for
incoming attacks.

I concur with the sentiment that nfs-common is wholly unnecessary for
most users. nfs-common brings in portmap, which makes three additional
(and for me, unnecessary) services that are pulled in by an essential
package.
Additionally, mount is priority required and nfs-common is priority
standard.
