Actually, I spoke too soon. Now the first level submenus show up under Debian but the menus under the first level don't all show up even though they are checked in alacarte. Checking/unchecking the lower level Debian menus in alacarte does nothing. They also will become unchecked without touching them right before your eyes. It looks like debian menus and alacarte don't play nice together.
