I too have been recently looking for how to solve this. I found a possible
workaround by adding a 70-no-nimbus.conf file to conf.avail and linking to

Yes, I second this request. A workaround is to delete the link in
/etc/fonts/conf.d/30-metric-aliases.conf, but just now I came upon
a site which actually specified Nimbus Sans L, so I still got the
ugly font.
Could the package maybe provide an optional file in /etc/fonts/conf.avail
