The OP stated that "ionice -c3" should work for
non-root users.

The maintianer said that this will be fixed for
later versions.

On my Lenny box running

"ionice -c3 -p$$" does work (or at least silently fails).
However the man page hasn't been updated to indicate that
"ionice -c3" works for non-root, or what versions
of the kernel it works for.
