Package: util-linux Version: 2.13.1.1-1 Followup-For: Bug #455880 The OP stated that "ionice -c3" should work for non-root users.
The maintianer said that this will be fixed for later versions. On my Lenny box running Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.23.9lw #105 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jun 27 18:56:59 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux "ionice -c3 -p$$" does work (or at least silently fails). However the man page hasn't been updated to indicate that "ionice -c3" works for non-root, or what versions of the kernel it works for. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.3 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-2-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages util-linux depends on: ii libc6 2.7-18 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libncurses5 5.7+20081213-1 shared libraries for terminal hand ii libselinux1 2.0.65-5 SELinux shared libraries ii libslang2 2.1.3-3 The S-Lang programming library - r ii libuuid1 1.41.3-1 universally unique id library ii lsb-base 3.2-20 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii tzdata 2009l-0lenny1.1 time zone and daylight-saving time ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime util-linux recommends no packages.
