For your interest, or anyone else reading this thread and having the same
issue, I was able to resolve this problem by commenting out the items in
nsswitch as above and changing the following in /etc/courier/authdaemonrc
I don't know why the issue arises, or whether it's anything to do with
DTC.
# Configured by DTC v0.12 : Please don't touch this line !
#authmodulelist="authmysql authpam"
authmodulelist="authpam"
# End of DTC configuration v0.12 : please don't touch this line !
(i.e. comment out the authmysql line)
