This bug has now been fixed in the upstream version 1.0.4 of pbzip2
available here:

It would be useful to have pbzip2 recognise all the command line
options that bzip2 does, so that pbzip2 could be used as a drop in
replacement.
-z, -q, -L and -- should be easy.
-s could be just ignored... perhaps?
