When xfwm is used as the window manager, it is possible to set the transparency
for various types of windows.
One of these types is popup window, such as tooltips, menus, etc. This type
also includes - xscreensaver.

I don't get it. How is it even possible for xfwm to interfere with
xscreensaver's windows? They are override-redirect.

I have no idea how any of this works. I'm just reporting what I'm
seeing. Transparency is done via compositing - that pretty much sums up
all I know.
I'm running GNOME with xfwm, if that information is useful.
Anything you want me to run, such as debugging software, etc, I'll be
happy to.
