Hi,
Could you try to copy pamusb.conf from your Ubuntu to your Lenny system ?
If pamusb-check works, it would mean it's a pamusb-conf related issue.
If not, it might be because of the kernel/hal combination.

This problem seems to be present in current 0.4.2, while it stopped when
user created a partition on the device¹.
Ubuntu had problems, too, but a system update seems to solve it².
