I can confirm that there is a regression in 2.6.25 and 2.6.26 from 2.6.24 regarding reading from certain (actually quite a lot of) usb flash readers.

I have personally experienced this with the eeepc internal SDHC card reader, and a SanDisk MicroMate external usb SDHC card reader, with debian kernels 2.6.25-2-686 (linux-2.6/2.6.25-7) and 2.6.26-1-686 (linux-2.6/2.6.26-4).

And so have others:
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/debian-eeepc-devel/2008-August/000837.html
(and many reports of similar problems)
and a fix has been committed to 2.6.27:
http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/git-commits-head/2008/8/6/2832894
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=shortlog;h=v2.6.27-rc2

I'm not 100% certain that the above describe exactly the same as bug 494976, but: (a) they do sound suspiciously similar, with similar but not identical error messages (b) in any case, there is a pretty bad regression here which means that if lenny has 2.6.26 without this patch, it will not be a usable kernel in some reasonable setups (eg booting the eeepc from an SD card in its internal SDHC slot).

HTH,

Barry
