Yes downgrading worked.
Upgrading to 1.2.7 broke splashy test and then downgrading right away
fixed it.
So now is this a splashy issue or a libdirectfb?

I encountered the same issue and fixed it by downgrading
libdirectfb-extra from 1.2.7-1 to 1.0.1-11.
This was a mistake while upgrading experimental packages.
Is your issue the same (you can test as root in a console by running
splashy test).
