In my case - a recently installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx - the splash screen
was normal for a couple of weeks until today, when it appeared upside
down, black and white and in low-res.
I'm not aware of having done anything to the splash image itself, but

Same problem here but i have 3 computers running debian squeeze (testing), and
this appears only in the machine that is running inside of Vmware at work.

Works for me. With intel hardware.
