sorry for the late answer; I ended up starting from a clean home and
now things work.
The one think that I've got clear, is that xmodmap screws up things.
There were other problems anyway, but they must have been related to
the transition from 4.4 and they disappeared with a new config dir.

No, I had to redo all my keyboard shortcuts after every login. But after
the Xorg upgrade this is not necessary anymore.

Attached. I tried with a clean user as well, I get the same behaviour...
I attached the new user shortcuts as well, suffixed .new;
keyboard-layout wasn't present there since I did

They are not set each time I log in.
(They are actually set, if I look in xfce4-keyboard-settings or check
with xfconf-query, they just don't work)

again.
