What about simply doing the split, keeping python-qt4 as a metapackage
that installs everything for compatibility, and letting individual
package maintainers progressively adjust dependencies ?
A lintian warning to discourage packages to depend on the metapackage
could then be introduce to speed

the updated packages with the new dependency scheme have been uploaded
and seem to be doing well; when they've reached testing we'll make
another upload that splits up the packages in a sane manner.

Hi,
just to keep you updated, we're working on that. It'll likely go
together with a renaming and addressing of a couple of other issues,
like proper handling of ABI changes in sip.
