From a quick test I ran with the group disk, it's not enough, hddtemp
will give a 'Permission denied' error.
In addition, it looks like hddtemp has an option to configure it as
SUID, but this is not the default

hddtemp2 (which uses 'hddtemp') will run as root (otherwise it doesn't work):
