AFAICT upstream hasn't had a release since 2005, so Debian's version is still current. It still Just Works for me, e.g.

Even w3m-img's inline image rendering works! I'm testing on an Asus
Eee PC 1005P (GMA 3150), running Sid, using the i915 framebuffer
driver with modesetting (KMS) enabled.
