Cheese fails upon startup as described by others above. Further
investigating the issue using gstreamer-properties' Test Video
Source button shows that gstreamer's V4L2 implementation might
in fact be what's broken:

Segmentation fault
Cheese does not start, crash at start up even in the version 2.30.1 on
Debian wheezy

the first being a TV capture card, the second being a webcam, which
works as expected under gqcam).
