I’m using Debian/Squeeze with emacs23, and I experience the same problem, with a discrepancy similar to that of the screenshot sent by the reporter. I use “DejaVu Sans Mono Book” as monospace default font.
Note though that the problem only occurs when, in GNOME appearance properties, I set font rendering to “Best shapes”.
