After some discussion with the upstream maintainer, if this bug is caused by what was guessed it should be fixed[1] in the new upstream release.
Unfortunately the new upstream release is blocked on getting libchamplain 0.6 into debian, which is in turn blocked by needed changes in libmemphis because of the python bindings.
