I've caught icedove doing the same thing on a 32 bit machine.
htop showed the thread at 98% CPU - might be due to large folders?
Had to issue a kill pid to calm things down.

amd64): I close icedove window (hitting close button up-right), the window
closes indeed, but pretty frequently the icedove processes continue to run
