http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1163070.html ...killing gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor before connecting the camera both avoids the error message and allows the camera to be accessed by other tools. This is both a workaround and perhaps a step closer to identifying the real cause of this issue.
