Hello,

The initrd of the Debian installer currently support FAT, ISO 9660 and
Ext2/3 and ReiserFS for loading stuff, for instance when using hd-media
(to find udebs) or netboot (to find firmwares for one's f..king NIC).

These filesystems each have its drawbacks, for instance:
* FAT lacks many features, such as symlinks and large files;
* ISO 9660 is read-only;
* Ext2/3 and ReiserFS are not supported by most foreign OSes.

There is one interesting filesystem out there that is quite interesting
for portable media: UDF, the universal disk format, mostly known for
being the standard DVD filesystem. Its most interesting features are:
* being supported by almost every OS for being the standard DVD FS;
* being usable in read-write mode;
* having any features one could expect in a correct file system, such as
  symlinks and permissions;
* having some extra features such as “anonymous” file ownership (cf.
  Documentation/filesystems/udf.txt), useful for removable media.

I think it would be useful to add support for this UDF filesystem, as it
would allow to build USB and optical disk images usable:
* in read-write mode;
* with correct features (for instance a symlink background.png ->
  spacefun.png, a large file debian-6.0.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso);
* with foreign OSes (for instance to modify a preseed file).

Regards,
