I did some more experiments and I think that the bug should be reassigned to
the kernel.
1) * Boot into the (bad) wheezy system
# mount /dev/disk/by-label/squeeze-amd64 /mnt/tmp
# mount --bind /proc /mnt/tmp/proc
# mount --bind /dev

One thing I was wondering about: when I prepared my initial mail, I diffed the
good/bad alsa-info.sh outputs, and the line 'inside_vm : Y' under
'Loaded sound module options' of snd_intel8x0 looked suspicious to me.

My system was working fine with Squeeze, all the way through to the final
release. Sound works fine using the "NVidia CK804 with ALC850" integrated in
my motherboard.
As soon as I upgraded to the wheezy testing release, however, the soun
