dconf-gsettings-backend is a dependency of gnome-shell already.
I can't reproduce this behaviour here with 3.8.4-5+b1.
Could you please still reproduce it ?

Thanks Emilio. Installing dconf-gsettings-backend seems to have fixed the
issue. Shouldn't that be added as a requirement for gnome-shell package?
