Update!
After upgrading to CUPS 1.4.7-1 (from 1.4.6-9) the message logged to
/var/log/messages when the spooler attempts to send data to the printer is:
Jul 27 11:10:16 Main kernel: [ 2175.764342] usb 1-5: usbfs: interface 0
claimed by usb-storage while 'usb' sets config #1
Jul 27 11:10:16 Main kernel: [ 2175.765470] usb 1-5: usbfs: process 2999
(usb) did not claim interface 0 before use
The "process 2999..." part is a change from the past.
