What's the status of this bug?
transmission is still using zib.h without any explicit build-dependency
against zlib1g-dev.

Nope, it just went totally under the radar since the bugs
Well, Debian Squeeze was released in February 2011;
meanwhile, transmission 2.03-2.1 2.03-2.2 NMUs were made in August 2011.
Looks like those NMU were not meant for stable (Squeeze),
but only to make the transmission package version from stable buildable on
unstable.
