I had no luck with the patch provided here (and having GNU Mailman 2.1.29-1+deb10u1 from Debian buster running on the server). However, https://wiki.list.org/DOC/Additional%20web%20administration%20tools provides a way to unsubscribe members using curl. I translated the suggested command into perl code and integrated it into listadmin as a fallback.
