Could you please still reproduce this issue with newer gnome-shell version
like 3.4.2-7+deb7u1 or 3.8.4-5+b1 ?
It is working fine here with 3.8.4-5+b1.

I cannot
I'm currently experiencing a similar problem if a type 'da' in the
search box. I see that X is kind of refreshed.. or sometimes it logs me
out of the session.
I guess it's dependent on some personal configuration.
I had added a darktable-git.desktop in ~/.local/share/applications/, so
I
let me add that I've already tried removing
~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
but the problem persists
the problem occurs also if I open a new user session
find attached ~/.cache/gdm/session.log
my video card is:
$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen

I have resolved the issue by modifying
/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/search.js
after following:
updateSearch: function(searchString) {
I added:
if (searchString.length 2) return;
So I got this:
updateSearch: function(searchString) {
