While I'm trying to understand the nature of a problem you might find
interesting to have a look at the abiword build log from powerpc architecture:

Symlinking debian's /usr/lib/powerpc-linux-gnu/libabiword-2.9.so to
/usr/lib doesn't fix anything, as you already guessed.
And no, I never used debian build system's devscripts before, so
