I spotted the update to the NVIDIA driver, so retried my workstation.
GNOME Shell now starts so whatever was causing that problem has gone
away.
I haven't had opportunity to use the workstation for a period though
because everytime I try a write a new email with Evolution (either

I noticed that NVIDIA had released 295.33 on 2012-03-22 so I removed all
the Debian packages and installed the downloaded NVIDIA run file. It
seemed to work for a while but then I got a spontaneous X termination --
i.e. a forced termination of my login session. GDM3 restarted with the
