Sorry for not mentioning it in the Debian BTS earlier!
I was affected too. I believe this is actually a bug in GStreamer[0],
that was fixed already upstream. At least using upstream commit
401f9b3de72de759c76da155a339c754b653bf9d to patch GStreamer 0.10.36-1

maybe as a data point for starting to bisect things, the error does not
occur, and cheese runs just fine, if I use this live dvd with the
exactly same hardware and camera where the on-disk image is failing:
