This seems to be two bugs in one! Please consider filing a separate bug
report for the occasional crash when merging (if it is still happening
to you). We would need more information about exactly what was being
merged, and any error reports to track down tha

Because spelling was subject to artistic freedom more than 200 years ago,
complete families may be appear in the database in duplicate. There seems
to be only the possibility to independently merge the parents, rather than
the family.
