-I inode-size
Specify the size of each inode in bytes. mke2fs creates
256-byte inodes by default...
but if I do this for a small test device (~64M):
# mke2fs -t ext4 /dev/whatever
even though /etc/mke2fs.conf

Ahh -- that's what I hadn't seen. For what it's worth, something like
this in the documentation for -I would probably have been sufficient
