I was able to get the nvidia module for version 304.88-5 to build and work properly (so far) after applying the patch below from https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/549532/linux/linux-3-10-incompatibility-in-function-lsquo-nv_i2c_del_adapter-rsquo-error-void-value-not-igno/post/3852809/#385280
