Sorry for the noise.
When I updated the packages, I was able to successfully invoke shutdown
from xfce successfully (ONCE).
But after an invoked reboot, I'm again requested for a password :(
root@rob-gigabyte:~# ls -l /sbin/init
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Apr 27 13:41 /sbin/init -> /lib/systemd/sys

After upgrading systemd:
