Thanks /a lot/ for properly fixing this and providing that detailed
explanation, it was very educational for me - really appreciated.

The package has just made the archive [1], and I can successfully
install it and run 'perf stat sleep 1' on ppc64el, for example.

I believe your general fix should also work for ppc64 and alpha,
which have an original bug report for this issue (#747151).

The package build still wasn't attempted on those arches [2, 3],
but in gratefulness, trying to provide some useful service back,
I'll keep an eye there and report on that bug.
