I filed basically this same bug at the GIT site for mate.

This is with Caja 1.14 as shipped b Debian? That version is not
compatable with GTK 3.21.5. Debian updated GNOME to version
3.21.91, which pulls in GTK 3.21.5 but did not update MATE, in
which Caja and mate-setting

Dear Maintainer,
I encounter the same problem. Caja doesn't start at all.
The problem arose after the first restart after having upgraded several
packages (see below).
Syslog tells:
caja[3214]: Theme parsing error: mate-application
I have Testing/Stretch on 2 computers, on both Caja is crashing after the
recent libgtk3 updates. I downloaded the sources and compiled it myself, it
still crashes.
dmesg:
caja[19781]: segfault at 7ffc177e3d18 ip 7fe3b627f7b6 sp
7ffc177e3d10 error 6 in libc-2.23.so[7fe3b6245000+197000]

I can also confirm this bug with the same package version on Sid. I
assumed it was due to my switching locales recently: glad to see others
are having the same problem.

I can confirm that, probably being the same package version, this bug affects
stretch too.
