this is not helpful for Debian Stretch users but just for the record:
The problem seems to be fixed in newer kernels, I don't see the error
messages or any flickering with kernel 4.12.5-300 on Fedora 26. The
system works perfectly with modesetting, no workaround needed.

The system doesn't really crash though: it shows a black screen with
flickering borders on the left and at the top of the screen. This

I want to add some points here (just for the record). Please note that
on all systems I use KDE Plasma 5:
1) The x201s has a core i7-640LM with a "GMA HD" graphics chip, so the
processor is a Nehalem/Westmere and
